Gus Hansen – The Great Dane

Gus Hansen (born 1974) is a world famous, Danish poker player – also known as “The Great Dane” – who has played in the biggest poker games in the world. He is known for his loose aggressive style, a style that tends to confuse his opponents. Gus Hansen has not yet won any bracelets in the World Series of Poker (WSOP), but he is among the most winning players of all time on the World Poker Tour (WPT) as he has won a WPT-title an incredible four times since 2002. Therefore, Gus Hansen has been inducted into the WPT’s Hall of Fame along with the legendary poker player Doyle Brunson. Furthermore, he won the Aussie Millions Main Event in 2007, where his prize was 1.5 million dollars in cash, which is one of his largest tournament winnings in his poker career. Throughout his poker career, Gus Hansen has won more than 5 million dollars in live poker tournaments.
When it comes to online poker, Gus Hansen has played against the toughest competition in the world – in the biggest cash games on Full Tilt Poker. At Full Tilt Poker, Gus Hansen has often experienced some unbelievable swings on his bankroll. His accomplishments in online poker have been less impressive than his live performances. In fact, Gus Hansen still struggles to win the millions of dollars back that he has lost by playing online poker. Nevertheless, Gus Hansen is a remarkable player: Intelligent and fearless at the same time. He is a player who always contributes to the game with a lot of entertainment and action.
Gus Hansen was also part of the reason why televised poker became increasingly popular since he participated in the popular TV-show “High Stakes Poker”. In a memorable hand, Gus Hansen beat the famous and well-liked Canadian poker player, Daniel Negreanu, with quads in a hand where Negreanu had a full house. Gus Hansen’s image as an aggressive, unpredictable player certainly worked to his advantage, and it was impossible for Negreanu to throw his hand. Thus, Gus Hansen won a huge pot worth $575,700 – the largest pot in the history of televised poker at that time. Watch the video clip with “The Great Dane” here.
